Your trivia for the day

We are experiencing beautiful fall weather here currently. I was out for a walk today, enjoying a little reprieve from a very busy and stressful day. Walking has become my solace, my means of de-stressing. So I was happily soaking it all in, the smell of smoke, the feeling of the crisp fall air on my face, the vibrant colors in the trees and the sunlight streaming through...it was so blissful and romantic. And then a bug flew up my nose.

Did you know.....
That tomato and paradise are the same word in Hungarian? I'm not sure which was assigned the word first...I need help seeing the connection. I love tomatoes, but there are better things to eat, like chocolate. That would make more sense if paradise and chocolate were the same word. But even then, I have bigger expectations of paradise than what I get out of a bite of chocolate.

Ha, ha, ha. I love that sentence about the bug. Hopefully it wasn't a HUGE bug.

things like that are why I love linguistics! how interesting...are tomatoes indigenous there? Or where they imported, and thus "exotic"? Perhaps one of the words was borrowed and adapted to the closest similar sounding word they could think of? Or maybe somewhere down the historical line one term or the other was truncated or went through some phonological changes and became the homonym...what is the word anyway?
how fun. thanks for tidbits like this!

Haha! I KNEW you would like this and have something to say about this, chucknsarah ;). The word is "paradicsimo", where the "cs" sounds like a 'c' s hackem.

Lisa,

If you take a tomato, slice it in half, top each half with dots of butter and sprinkle basil over it, then heat it under the broiler for a few minutes, and eat it, then you will understand the connection. Not to mention all the nutritional value. And when you think that all you get from chocolate is the desire for more and if you indulge you only feel ill, then where is the "paradise" in that? I'll take the lesson from the Hungarians or the Finno-Urgic family. : ) I love you, Mamka
